چکیده

This report shares the feasibility study results of abrasive flow polishing of microbores of size φ500 μm or smaller and 25∼50 in aspect ratio for both metal and ceramic materials. A polishing device was designed and built up so as to create enough turbulence for facilitating the polishing at the inner walls of the micro-bore. Polishing of micro-bores on 3 materials: S45C, SS304 and Zr2O3 of length 13.6 mm, were conducted. Surface roughness and topography of the polished inner walls were studied using profilometry and optical interferometry form the three dimensional point of view. Significant progress in surface roughness in all inner walls has been made in the polishing process. The results indicate that it is feasible to apply abrasive flow polishing for metal and ceramic micro-bores of diameters smaller than 500 μm. It is also found that the surface roughness of the inner wall decreases with the increasing number of slurry flow pass at a relatively constant applied pressure. However there exists a critical number of flow passes beyond which the improvement in surface quality is marginal.

A Study on the Abrasive Gels and the Application of Abrasive Flow Machining in Complex-Hole Polishing

Due to the fact that abrasive media can deform flexibly in abrasive flow machining (AFM) making this method easily to polish the complex holes and the curved surface of the hard machining shapes. Although abrasive media dominate the polishing behavior in AFM process, the mechanism of the abrasive media are not easy to understand because of the high viscous gels, therefore, many finishing works ...

Abrasive Jet Polishing and its Applications in Surface Finishing

Problem statement: Single Point Diamond Turning (SPDT) is highly deterministic and versatile in producing various forms of precise optics. A typical example is the production of large offaxis aspheric mirrors and various infrared mirrors and mandrels. However, the fine periodical turning marks left in the surface critically limit its performance and they are difficult to be avoided for traditio...

Characterization of Pad Materials in Abrasive Profile Polishing

INTRODUCTION Hard and temperature resistant materials are used for mold manufacturing of optical glass lenses. These materials are not machinable by ultra precision diamond milling and turning processes. For example hardened steel or tungsten carbide can be ground in optical quality regarding shape but additional polishing is necessary to guarantee the high requirements for optical surface qual...
